FAGSNACK: Childhood vaccination controversies

Some of the most fraught issues in dealing with medical expertise are seemingly routine decisions such as when to get your child vaccinated. Can science studies help us think this issue through and how? In this talk Professor Trevor Pinch draws upon his own personal experience and battles with doctors and with fellow sociologists.

Bring your lunch pack – we will serve coffee/tea! The talk will be followed by questions and comments. There will be a guided tour of the Medical museum next door after the talk for those interested.

When: June 24th 11.30-12.15
Where: Library of Health and Medicine, Kunnskapssenteret 2nd floor

Welcome!

About the speaker:
Trevor Pinch is Professor in Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University, US. He has published widely on the sociology of technology and how users engage with technology, and, more recently, sound studies. With Harry Collins he co-authored the book Dr Golem: How to Think about Medicine (2006). In the book, they spend a chapter elaborating upon vaccination politics surrounding the issue of whether the MMR vaccine leads to autism:
"This chapter is used to address three central themes in Dr Golem: the role of uncertainty in science and medicine, patient expertise and how far it can be extended, and medicine as succor versus medicine as science. Vaccination is a particularly  emotive and salient issue for many parents who worry about what vaccinations to give their young children and whether such vaccines cause damage through side effects. But how far should public health policy go in paying attention to such  concerns?"
